Classroom Policies
It is a pleasure having your son or daughter in my class this year. Thank you for sharing your unique children with me! The following information will assist you in understanding our classroom subjects and routines.
Reading , writing, and mathematics are taught through a workshop model. This means the whole class is taught a lesson that lasts fifteen to twenty minutes. Students are then taught in small groups at their instructional levels. Also, students frequently participate in interactive learning activities. This means they complete tasks with a partner or a small group of students. Teaching with this approach allows me to meet the individual needs of each of my students as well as keep them motivated and curious about learning.
Third graders learn spelling through the Fundations Program. They are familiar with Fundations because it is the program used in the primary grades. Students are taught various spelling rules. Once they master the rules they are able to spell and/or decode words that fit the rules. Therefore, you will not see a weekly spelling list or test coming home each week. Instead, once a skill has been taught and practiced, students will be assessed in order to determine if they are able to apply the spelling rules taught in class.
Homework is an important extension of your child's school day. Students are expected to read for pleasure each evening. The more they read the better reader they will become. I assign written homework Monday through Thursday. Children will learn to record assignments in their daily planners. Please view and sign their planner each day to help them become responsible for their assignments. Your son/daughter will need a homework folder to transport the work to and from school. Homework, including their pleasure reading, should take about 30 minutes each evening.
Students eat a snack each afternoon. Please send a nutritious, PEANUT FREE, snack to school. We cannot provide snacks for children who forget their snacks or eat their snack at lunch.
If your son/daughter needs a fidget to help them to focus throughout the day I will supply an appropriate fidget. Please do not allow your child to bring in their own fidgets. I find they become distractions more than assets. Toys are not allowed from home. There are plenty of indoor recess activities in the classroom if the weather prevents children from playing outdoors.
